Till 2001 A.D. we faced lots of health problem in the school. Whenever someone felt sick or had an accident, we had to take them to clinic outside the school which was 10-15 minutes walk from the school. Serious and complicated patients had to be taken to bigger hospital which was 25-30 minutes away by vehicle. So it was very difficult for the school as we had over 500 students and there are lots of chances of accident and health problems as most of the children are from the Himalayan Region of Tibet, Bhutan, India and Nepal. Some of these children have never seen a vehicle till they joined SMD. This is how backward our students are before they join SMD.
By the kindness of Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche and our sponsors, School Clinic was established in 2001. School bought some general medicines and dressing instruments. One nurse was hired as well. Still then we didn't have any first-aid surgical instruments and medicines. As time passed by we had a new Health Worker and later we got some kind sponsors who brought some advanced instruments like stitching and first-aid stuff as well as vitamins and various kinds of medicines.
Then a monk compounder, Ven. Wangchuk Rapten, who was appointed by Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche from Thrangu Tashi Choeling Monastery, Boudha, Kathmandu. He was once a student at SMD. He is responsible of overall in-charge of clinic. He had gone to school of medicine. He knows about general medicines, pathology, dental assistant, craniosacral therapy etc. He is lifetime membership of Nepal Red Cross Society.
In the year 2005, Rapten gathered students who were interested in health and medicine and established a club called “SMD HEALTH CLUB”. We each and everyone help at clinic turn wise -during our helping time. If we face some problems then Ven. Wangchuk Rapten and Bal Kumari are helping us on that spot. There is nurse gathering once in a month or in two months. There we discussed about the problems on medicine, health or hygiene etc. And we try our best to bring better development .Everyone gathered and speak their own views and opinions. In this way we discuss about the problems and try to find a solution by ourselves in group.
The clinic provides regular dressing twice a day and regular use of medicines. The reasons are always the same. We have children from remote places specially form Himalayan region -poor conditions of life -where are usually unhealthy and unhygienic. Clinic provides all health checkup and provides medicines and has they grow up; we can see lots of positive changes. Mainly because of good foods and vitamins-which are donated from abroad? Sometimes we get sponsors sending lots of vitamins which last for several months but sometime we don't have any. We have some children having inherited disease or by birth. Children sometimes get diseases (temporarily) which are contagious inside the community.
In the past ,the clinic was quite small but now it is moved into a bigger room because we got new furniture, cupboard for keeping medicines and various medicinal instrument .As we all know that health is wealth, so it's important for us to be conscious about individual as well as community health. As long as there is school clinic and sponsor, there is possibility of having cent percent healthy environment at school. We hope that school clinic will remain forever and be advance with the flowing time. To improve the health statues at school, there should cooperation, participation and consciousness of the entire person. |
Special Sick Room is for those students who have longlasting sickness. Even in SMD, there are some students who have painful diseases like Hepatites, epilepsy, etc.
The idea of opening the Special Sick room was of the Clinic-in-charge, Wangchuk Rapten. He thought of this a long before it was started but due to the of lack of room at SMD, it took long time to turn in action. Rapten requested to the SMD Management Committee for the long-term sick students and a special room for them. Management committees accept the proposal. Later he got one room emptied and special room was set up there in the class where nuns of Thragu Tara Abbey used to study about Tibetan medicine. Finally the idea got succeed to care a long-term sick students. Read More.. |
